Bears 2022 – Part II

Each morning while I was at Lake Clark National Park in Alaska mama bear (Agra) would bring her two cubs out to walk the beach looking for fish or clams. Not finding much she kept up a fast pace. The two cubs didn’t seem to mind, running, playing and exploring along the way.

The Morning Routine

Agra’s first stop was to check out the mouth of the stream where salmon should have been. That being unsuccessful she would continue down the beach for miles occasionally stopping to check out possible clamming spots when the tide was low. A few times it seemed that the clamming might be successful, but she never stayed long at any spot.

Sports fishermen going out in their boats or fishing the streams had the most luck. The ones I met had all caught their limits of halibut and salmon. However, the eagles and seagulls appeared to be as frustrated as the bears with the lack of clams and salmon.

Every morning except when the rain kept us in we would see Agra and her cubs walking the beaches. Regretfully, for the first time in decades, there wasn’t a salmon run this year. The bears were forced to go to other areas to find fish.
