PHOTOGRAPHING HORSES IN IDAHO

Travel opportunities have been limited this past year, but in June I was able to travel to Idaho to photograph one of my favorite subjects. At the Western Pleasure Guest Ranch, which caters to photographers, I enjoyed photographing beautiful horses and the amenities of the ranch for 5 days. The talented wranglers set up shots both outdoors and in enclosed arenas. My favorites, of course, are from the indoor arenas with lots of dust and moody lighting from high windows. Let me know what your favorites are.

The ranch has a variety of horses from Appaloosas to Paints and Halflingers to Belgian Draft horses. Photographing the horses as a herd of 40+ created some wonderful scenarios with dust and water.

The Appaloosas were flashy. In fact, one was named Flash. The three big bay Belgium Draft horses were magnificent…at one time creating what I called a “chorus line” while they ran in the outdoor arena. The “Three Reds” offered some fun images as one seemed to have a bone to pick with one of the others. There were opportunities for a few portraits, too.

The indoor arenas were challenging as were the outdoor shots in bright sunlight, but all very rewarding. I hope you enjoy seeing the results in the images below. More of my images can be seen under “GALLERIES” at the top of the page.

Upcoming are shots from my annual Alaskan Coastal Brown Bear shoot, the latest Frog shots, and my upcoming African safari. There will probably be images from my gardens mixed in, too. Thank you for your interest in my photography. Please feel free to leave me comments on the blog or to contact me privately via this website. My images are for sale.
