The American Bald Eagle

Images From Alaska, USA

A number of times I’ve traveled to Alaska to photograph the Bald Eagles that congregate there in the winter. It’s quite a sight to see hundreds of eagles flying, diving, fishing or just sitting in trees. Below are some of my favorite images from these trips.

Fishing Eagles

In the winter eagles will move to areas like the ones around Homer, Alaska, when the waters in their normal territories are frozen over cutting off a big part of their food supply. The area around Cook’s Inlet has open water, good fishing and fish processing plants. Big attractions for the predator/scavenger eagles.

Acrobats In The Sky

Bald Eagles are known for their grace and acrobatic maneuvers in the sky. They are one of the largest birds in North America and are powerful fliers with wing spans of 6-8′ as adults. Eagles are amazingly graceful and agile for such a large bird.

Snowy Days

Weather in Alaska changes quickly in March. We can have bright sunny days and the next minute a snow flurry or cloudy skies. The first image is of a juvenile eagle. It takes four to five years for an eagle to mature into the white head and dark body.

Flybys

Whether searching from the sky or skimming the water the Bald Eagle is impressive as it flies.

In Golden Light

On one particular day for a brief 90 seconds or so a glorious golden light pierced the clouds. It only lasted long enough for a few shots, unfortunately.

Close Up

The eagles are habituated to human activity so it was possible to get quite close to them on the beaches where they rested between forays.

Tail End

A dead tree on the beach made a great “Eagle Pole”. I made the second shot very quickly in order to avoid unpleasant consequences. I think the eagle was a bit surprised. 🙄

Thanks for taking your time to join me. I hope you’ve enjoyed the images. A special thanks to those of you who have commented on my posts. Your comments are very much appreciated. Until the next post, Cheryl
